Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum

The town’s history museum in the old Denver & Rio Grande railroad depot, run by the Castle Rock Historical Society, which also holds monthly public talks and downtown walking tours.

The Castle Rock Historical Society keeps its museum in the town’s Denver & Rio Grande depot, which Castle Rock won in 1875 after locals pushed for a stop on the narrow-gauge line. The society hosts monthly presentations by local historians and guest speakers, open to the public, and leads walking tours of downtown and of Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The depot is built of local rhyolite stone, and the restored interior keeps the old ticket window and baggage area; the Historical Society says railroad workers’ names remain on an interior wall. The building was moved from the tracks to Elbert Street in 1970, and the museum opened in 1997.
